One of the more anticipated times of year for an Alabama Crimson Tide football fan has now officially arrived, as the program is set to hold its’ annual “A-Day” spring game this upcoming Saturday from inside Bryant-Denny Stadium.
However, this year’s version of A-Day will not necessarily look the same as the past, with the being difference likely being the fact that the spring game will not be televised. Let’s take a look at some of the biggest storylines surrounding the Crimson Tide entering A-Day this Saturday.
Who has the advantage in Alabama‘s quarterback competition?
We begin with the storyline that has dominated Alabama’s offseason so far in the ongoing quarterback competition, in particular, which of the three names has the advantage, if any? Entering the spring game, the starting spot feels like it is still Ty Simpson’s to lose, but the competition is certainly close between the former five-star, Austin Mack, and freshman Keelon Russell.
Alabama true freshmen making first Bryant-Denny Stadium appearance
Saturday will mark the first public appearance for Alabama’s 2025 freshman class inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium in game action. There are multiple freshmen who have had strong springs such as wide receiver Lotzeir Brooks and cornerback Dijon Lee, and many of those same names could have big days Saturday.
Attention is on Alabama’s wide receiver room
Outside of quarterback, there might not be a position group that has more hype surrounding it going into the spring game for Alabama than at wide receiver. Not only does Alabama return both Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard, but the Crimson Tide have also brought in newcomers that could have huge impacts this season such as Isaiah Horton and the aforementioned Brooks, while other notable returns such as Rico Scott.
New Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb making Bryant-Denny Stadium debut
Saturday will be the first public appearance for new Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb inside of Bryant-Denny Stadium while calling plays for the Crimson Tide. The long-time DeBoer assistant comes to Alabama after a season with the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL, but was with the Crimson Tide head coach as offensive coordinator previously at multiple stops that included Washington.
How will Alabama’s special teams look?
Lastly, Alabama is tasked with replacing with all three of their specialists from last season, and Saturday will be the first look at who those replacements might end up being. Now yes, spring games do not normally feature normal in-game special teams play, but there should still be a look at field goal kicking in particular.
