How Atlanta Dream head coach Karl Smesko has played to his team’s strengths, while also guiding them to improvement from beyond the arc

On the broadcast of Wednesday night’s Game 2 of the WNBA semifinal series between the Atlanta Dream and New York Liberty, ESPN showed Dream head coach Karl Smesko working with Angel Reese on her 3-point shot. They reported Smesko promised Reese that the 3-pointer would become a part of her game.

Atlanta went on to win Game 2 to go up 2-0 over the New York Liberty, putting them one win away from the Finals. They shot 12-for-30 (40 percent) from 3, with Jordin Canada going 3-for-6, Naz Hillmon going 1-for-6 and Reese going 1-for-2.

Canada may have attempted and made more 3s per game in 2023 with the Los Angeles Sparks than she did the past two seasons under Smesko, but her marks of 2.8 makes per game and 47.8 percent efficiency in the 2026 playoffs are unprecedented for her—by a long shot.

Meanwhile, Hillmon may have been inefficient on Wednesday, but her 1-for-6 effort in a single game matched the the total number of 3s she took in her three seasons in the WNBA before Smesko arrived in Atlanta last season. In two years under Smesko, she’s fired away 335 regular-season attempts with 105 makes for a decent 31.3 percent clip.

Of the three, Reese has the longest way to go in the 3-point department. She went from 0.6 attempts per game prior to Smesko to 1.3 attempts per game, but her percentage remained under 20 percent this regular season.

Smesko isn’t about to give up on her, though, just like he hasn’t given up on any of the Dream players who have been working to improve from beyond the arc. He has been rewarded with three made triples from Reese this postseason, which ESPN play-by-play broadcaster Ryan Ruocco continues to refer to as “found money.”
