St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Bürki was taken off on a stretcher after suffering a head injury in the U.S. Open Cup final against the Columbus Crew on Wednesday, Oct. 21.

Bürki was involved in a frightening incident midway through the second half. Crew winger Anass Zaroury saw Bürki save his shot, then inadvertently kneed the goalkeeper in the head as he was leaping over him.

The veteran goalkeeper was down motionless for several minutes as he received treatment on the pitch. Eventually he was loaded onto a stretcher and wheeled off the field.

Bürki did manage to wave and give a thumbs up to the crowd as he was stretchered off. He was replaced by Ben Lundt in the 78th minute of a scoreless game.

The game would eventually go to a shootout after 120 scoreless minutes, where Lundt would make one save to help St. Louis to a 5-3 win. It was the first trophy in club history.
