Warriors eye Nikola Jokic as potential 2027 target

The Golden State Warriors hope Nikola Jokic could become available next summer, with the franchise believing it remains an attractive destination for a major acquisition, according to Jake Fischer.

Speaking on SiriusXM NBA Radio, Fischer said Golden State is monitoring the possibility of pursuing the Denver Nuggets superstar in 2027.

“The Warriors are one of those teams out there that are like looking around and rubbing their fingers together and thinking, are we sure Jokic isn’t going to become available next summer?” Fischer said.

He added that Golden State believes it could have the salary-cap flexibility to make a major move while building around Stephen Curry.

“They are one of those teams that hopes we could have max cap space. We’ve got Steph Curry,” Fischer said.

Fischer also pointed to the Warriors’ continued belief that they can attract a high-profile player, either through a trade or free agency.

“The Warriors still believe that they are a destination,” Fischer said, citing a person familiar with the organization. “They still think that they will be able to attract, whether it be a trade or on the open market, someone big next summer.”

Golden State previously pursued Giannis Antetokounmpo but did not land the Milwaukee Bucks star. Kevin Durant also did not want to return to the Warriors around a previous trade deadline, Fischer noted.

The franchise did acquire Jimmy Butler, and Fischer said the fit had been working well before Butler’s injury.

“They believe that just like Jimmy ended up being the guy who did come, even though he got hurt, it was working pretty well before he went down,” Fischer said.

Jokic would represent an entirely different level of acquisition. The three-time NBA MVP has spent his entire NBA career with Denver and remains the centerpiece of the Nuggets.

The Serbian center averaged 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists in 65 games during the 2025-26 season. He has continued to produce at an elite level in 2026-27, averaging 23.4 points, 9.7 rebounds and 9.3 assists through seven games.

Jokic remains under contract with Denver. He is in the fourth season of a five-year, $276 million deal that includes a player option for the final season.

The Warriors have started the 2026-27 season 6-3, with Curry averaging 30 points through six appearances.
