Angel Reese and the Atlanta Dream overcame a 15+ point deficit for the second time this season on Sunday, defeating the Phoenix Mercury 82-80. Reese turned in another dominant performance in the contest, scoring 17 points and snagging 10 rebounds. Reese also had four steals in the game, including a clutch one late to help seal the comeback victory.
The win improved the Dream to 4-1 in the young season, good for sole possession of the best record in the WNBA. Reese and the Dream are well aware that they’re in sole possession of the top spot in the standings.

At this year’s Birthday Bash ATL, following the win, an annual hip hop festival in Atlanta, Reese spoke to the crowd.
“Well, this is my first Birthday Bash, and I’m really excited,” Reese said. “On the behalf of my teammates, we appreciate the support that y’all show us in the city, and we the number one team right now in the W.”
Too early in the season?
Some fans on social media were in disbelief about how confidently Reese made the declaration after such a small sample size.
“It’s been 6 games dude please pipe down,” one fan wrote on X.
“Angel Reese celebrating being the number #1 team in the WNBA before 8 games have been played is insane!!!” someone else added.

“6 games in lmao whatever,” one fan addded.
Others were more supportive of her declaration.
“AR said the Dream are the best team in the W right now — which is literally true based on the standings — and people still mad,” one fan added.
It’s worth noting that Reese’s biggest rival, Caitlin Clark, and the Indiana Fever are just behind Atlanta with the second spot in the standings. It’s early, but things are setting up for an amazing season.
