Claire Weinstein, Ivan Puskovitch Secure 5K Titles at U.S. Open Water Nationals

There’s a good chance that Claire Weinstein will represent the United States in the pool at this summer’s World Championships in Singapore. After all, Weinstein has established herself as a regular on the Team USA roster for international competitions, including at last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

On Sunday, Weinstein continued to demonstrate her prowess in open-water competition, as she captured first place in the 5K event at the United States National Championships. Coming off a runnerup finish in the 10K discipline earlier in the weekend, Weinstein won the 5K in dominant fashion, registering a time of 1:01:33. That time was 41 seconds faster than the runnerup time of Japan’s Ichika Kajimoto (1:02:14), who was competing as a visiting athlete. Third place went to Mariah Denigan in 1:02:15.

On the men’s side, familiar faces occupied the top-two places, with Ivan Puskovitch and Dylan Gravely finishing ahead of a quartet of Japanese contenders. Puskovitch posted a time of 56:10, which was two seconds quicker than 56:12 of Gravely. Puskovitch was the 19th-place finisher in the 10K at last summer’s Olympic Games in Paris.

In Junior Nationals action, Jackson Irwin won the men’s 7.5K event while Makenna Sherman was the titlist on the women’s side.
