Kentucky Football is suddenly just 1 game behind first place in the SEC standings

by admin

Not only did Kentucky Football become the first-ever FBS team to win consecutive games in OT with 2-pt conversions, but they are also now 3-1 in the SEC.

That is not something that happens a lot in Lexington. They have won 3 of the first 4 SEC games for only the second time this century.

The last time Kentucky started 3-1 in the SEC was in 2021, but that season doesn’t count thanks to some off-the-field stuff that led to it being vacated.

And yes, I know they happened; you remember it, and so do I. But pull up the record book, and you’ll see the Cats went 0-3 that year.

So, technically, this is the first time since 2018 that the Cats have started at least 3-1 in the SEC. Before that, though, it was all the way back in 1999 when the Cats started 0-1 in conference play, but ran off 3 straight SEC victories.

Next week in Norman, Will Stein can go 4-1 to start the SEC year, something Lexington hasn’t seen since 1977, when the Cats went 10-1 and 6-0 in the SEC.

If Stein can pull off that win in Norman, not only would Kentucky be guaranteed a bowl game, but a playoff chance would become all too real.

But we can’t forget about the race for a berth in the SEC Championship Game. Kentucky is not currently in the top two since Georgia is unbeaten at 4-0, while 3-1 Alabama has a head-to-head win over the Cats.

Even so, Kentucky is just one game back of first place in the SEC. And we’re now in the middle of October.

If by some miracle Georgia loses to Auburn, Alabama loses at Tennessee, and Kentucky wins at Oklahoma next week, the Cats would be in a tie with the Bulldogs for first place ahead of the Week 8 home game vs. Vanderbilt, followed by a bye week.

That means Kentucky could enter November firmly in the running for a spot in the SEC Championship.
