Mary-Sophie Harvey Scares Best Time in 200 IM to Cap Speedo Canadian Open
It’s early in the season, but Mary-Sophie Harvey is in form already, as she showed Saturday night on the final day of the Speedo Canadian Open.
Harvey won the 200 individual medley in 2:10.41 at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sports Centre. It buzzes within a second of her best time, a 2:09.57 that she supplied last year at Canadian Olympic Trials. Harvey’s time was 3.3 seconds ahead of runner-up Ella Jansen.
Madison Kryger also turned in a stellar performance on the final night of the meet. The 16-year-old went 2:13.37 to best Ingrid Wilm, a decade her senior, by .32 seconds. Shannon Meadway was third. Kryger is coming off a best time in the 200 back of 2:11.44 in March at the TYR Pro Swim Series.
Eric Ginzburg pulled off a double on the final day of the meet. He won the 100 butterfly in 53.58, six tenths up on Nicholas Duncan. He capped the night by winning the 50 free in 22.81. In that one, he got his hand to the wall first in a bunched field, with Chris Weeks and Luke Stewart-Beinder tied for second in 22.90 and veteran Yuri Kisil fourth in 22.94.
Matea Gigovic was the only swimmer to break a minute in the women’s 100 butterfly, winning in 59.82 seconds. She was a full second clear of Clare Watson. Alexanne LePage bounced back from finishing third in the 200 IM to win the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.66. She was 1.1 seconds ahead of Shona Branton, while Sydney Pickrem finished third.
Blake Tierney picked up a win in the men’s 200 back. The Canadian record holder went 2:02.54, nearly six seconds shy of his best, but still four tenths up on Loic Courville Fortin. Tierney came home in 30.41 to rally past Courville Fortin by .37 seconds.
Taylor Ruck picked up another sprint win with her time of 25.57 seconds in the 50 free. She was a quarter-second up on Sylvia Statkevicius, who went 25.84. Ranumi Eashwarage third in 26.19. Ruck was within .04 of the meet record set last year by Delia Lloyd.
Kent Goni Avila won the men’s 200 IM in 2:04.08. Owen Ekk was second, Cole Pratt third, all under 2:05. Oliver Dawson went 1:01.59 to claim the men’s 100 breast, outdueling Apollo Hess, who went 1:02.21. In the distance events, Tori Meklensek added to her 800 free win by going 4:17.69 in the 400 free. Aiden Kirk was denied a 400-800 double by Ethan Ekk, who won in 3:54.48. Kirk was second in 3:56.36.
