Michigan State basketball adding PG transfer Denham Wojcik, son of Tom Izzo’s assistant

by admin

Michigan State basketball didn’t have to look too far to add one more point guard to its 2025-26 roster.

All it took was Tom Izzo walking down the hall.

Denham Wojcik is expected to transfer and join his dad, assistant coach Doug Wojcik, with the Spartans. The elder Wojcik tweeted the news Friday, May 30, after his son’s graduation from Harvard, where he spent the past four years and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics. The younger Wojcik is arriving as a walk-on, MSU confirmed Friday night.

Team Nano Magic’s Denham Wojcik passes the ball in the game against Team Faygo on Thursday, June 23, 2022, during the Moneyball Pro-Am at Holt High School. Denham is the son of MSU assistant coach Doug Wojcik.

A 6-foot-2, 178-pound point guard with one year of eligibility remaining, Denham Wojcik entered the transfer portal in late January. He sat out all last season after averaging 1.8 points, 1.9 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 15.6 minutes a game in 2023-24 for the Crimson. He started four games that season and 16 of his 64 career games in three seasons for Harvard after prepping at La Lumiere School in Indiana.

Doug Wojcik, one of Izzo’s longtime confidantes, won the Big Ten’s assistant coach of the year award in March and has served as his boss’ right-hand man during games the season after becoming MSU’s associate head coach and taking on more of an advisory capacity. The graduate of the Naval Academy was an assistant under Izzo from 2003-05 before leaving to take the top job at Tulsa, which Wojcik held until being released from his contract in 2012. He then spent two seasons as head coach at College of Charleston, eventually returning to East Lansing and Izzo’s staff in 2018.

The Spartans are expected to begin summer workouts next week. Denham Wojcik is familiar with many of the players, having participated in the summer Moneyball Pro-Am along with his older brother Paxson, who began his career at Brown and finished as a grad transfer at North Carolina.

Wojcik is the Spartans’ fourth transfer addition and second new point guard after losing Tre Holloman (North Carolina State) to the portal and Jase Richardson to the NBA draft. Izzo brought in Miami (Florida) transfer Divine Ugochukwu earlier this month to back up starter Jeremy Fears Jr. The Spartans also added 6-4 shooting guard Trey Fort (Tennessee Martin/Mississippi State/Samford) and 6-7 wing Kaleb Glenn (Florida Atlantic/Louisville) from the portal.

Izzo is familiar with family ties on his roster. His son, Steven, was a walk-on for the Spartans from 2019-24.
