When it comes to repeating as WNBA champions, the New York Liberty knew that this season could be tough. They know that teams around the league are looking to knock them off every night on the court.

Well, so far, the league hasn’t figured out how to topple the Liberty. New York is a perfect 7-0 on the young 2025 season, hanging with the Minnesota Lynx as the only unbeaten teams left in the WNBA.

Because the Lynx have been playing outstanding ball, it’s sent New York, despite its perfect mark, looking up from the No. 2 spot in the latest WNBA Power Rankings, released by ESPN on Tuesday.

It’s not like the Liberty are playing bad basketball. They are not at all. Last week, New York recorded four wins — beating the Golden State Valkyries twice, the Washington Mystics, and the Connecticut Sun. Now they just didn’t beat the Sun; they annihilated them.

Jonquel Jones has been a standout star for the New York Liberty so far this season

Jonquel Jones, who had double-doubles in all the wins, helped the Liberty beat down Connecticut 100-52 on Friday, May 29.

New York tied its record for most 3-pointers made in a game with 19. Also, the Liberty’s 53 field goal attempts were the fewest in a 100-point game in league history. Breanna Stewart is among the WNBA’s top scorers, averaging 18.1 ppg. at this point. Stewart will keep on producing numbers as long as her teammates get her the ball.

Don’t look for the Liberty to slow down one bit. They only have one game on their schedule this week, going up against the Mystics on the road on Thursday, June 5. In their previous win, Jones recorded a season-high 18 rebounds.

As the WNBA begins Commissioner’s Cup play in June, careful observers of the league expect the Liberty and Lynx to meet in the Cup final. If this happens, then it would mark the second straight year that the Liberty and Sun will look to capture the coveted crown in that final clash.

The Liberty want to repeat as WNBA champions, so they have their work cut out for them as the season rolls along.
