Oklahoma Sooners named ‘most improved’ by USA TODAY Sports

by admin

The Oklahoma Sooners needed a start like the one they’ve enjoyed. They’re 4-0 and 1-0 in SEC play and earned a pair of wins over AP Top 25 teams. They’re the only team in the SEC with two top 25 wins. It’s a drastic difference from the team we saw in 2024.

Oklahoma still has a lot to prove, but with the way they’ve played, they have put themselves into the top 10 of the US LBM Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25. After the first month of the season, Paul Myerburg of USA TODAY Sports named the best and worst of the first month, naming the Sooners the “Most Improved Team.”

After fumbling through a rocky SEC debut, the Sooners have quickly rebounded thanks to a drastic offensive reboot that included the addition of transfer quarterback John Mateer. While Mateer’s hand injury could sideline him for a month, Oklahoma remains a major playoff contender with conference play about to kick into high gear. A difficult schedule gives them some wiggle room if the Sooners can bag some quality wins. – Myerburg, USA TODAY Sports

The Sooners have a chance to find their way back into the College Football Playoff for the first time since 2019, but they’ll have to navigate a schedule against six teams that rank inside the Top 25 of the latest coaches poll. However, if they can get Mateer back sooner rather than later and get their running game going, Oklahoma has a defense that keeps them in contention.

Oklahoma has the No. 4 defense in the nation according to ESPN SP+. The Sooners are third in the nation in points allowed per game and No. 2 in the nation in yards allowed per game. Though they haven’t recorded a turnover this season, the Sooners are No. 1 in the nation in sacks per game.

This is the most complete team of the Brent Venables era at Oklahoma. They’ve gotten off to a great start but still have a lot to prove as they wade through the 2025 season.
