Preview: World Cup gold medallists to shoot at University Games

by admin

Hyundai World Cup gold medallists are to feature at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games in Germany.

Rhine-Ruhr 2025 is the 32nd edition of the multi-sport event which holds competitions for 18 sports for athletes that are currently studying at their respective universities alongside sporting endeavours or recent graduates.

284 archers from around the world in the recurve and compound men’s and women’s disciplines are shooting at the Sportpark Am Hallo Stadion (qualifications) and Zeche Zollverein (finals), the same locations for the European senior Championships last year.

Unlike Essen 2024 though, there is a far more sprightly look to the 52 countries involved, as is usually the case for a University Games. However, there is still a blend of youth and elite-level pedigree in some of the squads following the recently concluded stages of the Hyundai World Cup .

Madhura Dhamangaonkar of India – India being one of six nations with a full 12-athlete contingent in Rhine-Ruhr – triumphed in the compound women’s gold medal match at Shanghai 2025 – the second stage – and is therefore booked to go into the finale of archery’s premier international circuit at Nanjing in October.

Great Britain’s Shanghai mixed team gold medallist Ajay Scott is also present this week in the compound men’s event, as is Trenton Cowles in the recurve men’s who was recently a part of USA’s silver medal men’s team in Madrid – the fourth and final stage of the 2025 circuit

Cowles is also on the American team for the Gwangju 2025 Hyundai World Archery Championships but Olympic Games gold medallist Nam Suhyeon isn’t for world leaders Korea, showcasing their bewildering strength in depth.

Suhyeon though is set to represent her country for the first time since Paris in Essen and joining her in the ever formidable Korean recurve women’s team is Lee Gahyun, another champion from Shanghai, another archer sealed for Nanjing.
