‘We’re a good shooting team’ Texas A&M HC Bucky McMillan is confident in his 2025 roster

Texas A&M’s basketball program has entered a new era, as head coach Bucky McMillan has nearly finalized his first official roster, securing 12 players from the transfer portal. At the same time, Spanish sharpshooter Rubèn Domíguez became the latest addition to an already loaded roster that should compete for an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2026.

On Monday, McMillan spoke to CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein about his transition to the SEC, including the Aggies’ demanding nonconference schedule, which will help prepare his new team for the conference slate. Compared to former head coach Buzz Williams’ defense-minded teams, which relied on elite rebounding and forcing turnovers, shooting efficiency was a constant issue and never improved.

Compared to Williams’ final 2024 roster, McMillan’s new roster includes several 35-plus percent 3-point shooters, led by former Texas Tech and Creighton guard Pop Issacs, who shot 38% from beyond the arc with the Bluejays last season.

“We’re a good shooting team. When you have that you’re capable of beating anybody. It’s a team you’ll see make over 20 threes in a few games this season. To make a run in the tournament you have to be able to shoot. We have multiple guys who could shoot over 40 percent from 3-point land.”

Taking a cue from Alabama, Florida and Missouri last season, who all made the NCAA Tournament, while the Gators brought home the National Title after defeating Houston, shooting three and make a high percentage of those shots is crucial to not only making it to the Big Dance, but making it past the Round of 32.

McMillan has the roster to get this done, and I can safely say that every Aggie fan is beyond excited to finally see a team that emphasizes offense over winning low-scoring contests with too many scoring droughts in between.
