Now that the annual spring game is over, there’s no telling what Michigan football might be in 2025. The Wolverines have what looks like one of the best defenses in the country, but the offense still has a lot of questions.
With Bryce Underwood likely being the starting quarterback, the No. 1 overall recruit in the country could raise the level of the passing game significantly, especially considering the Wolverines were the worst in the Big Ten in that regard a year ago. But, as a first-year player, he very well could also make a ton of mistakes as he acclimates to college football.
On3’s Andy Staples put out his post-spring top 25 on Monday, and while he ranked Michigan football at No. 17, he makes an instant caveat that if Underwood and the offense can perform, then he already has made a mistake.
17. Michigan
If Michigan’s offense can be even slightly above-average, then I have the Wolverines ranked too low. It appears freshman QB Bryce Underwood may have to be the day-one starter, which wasn’t the original plan. If he needs some time to develop, then it could look like last year for a little while. If he immediately lives up to his recruiting hype, then Michigan becomes a title contender again.
Given what we saw in the spring game, despite the 12-for-26 statline, Underwood appears to be far ahead of what the maize and blue put out there under center a year ago. But much will also depend on the offensive line and wide receiving corps.
Michigan’s schedule is much easier than it was last season, but the caveat there is that the Wolverines do not have two home games in a row all year.
