The WNBA Finals are coming to a close, but this offseason brings plenty of intrigue. The Connecticut Sun are relocating to Houston, and two more teams are joining the WNBA in a couple of years. Player movement will be huge, and the free-agent class is loaded. One of them is Sophie Cunningham.
She’s an incredibly polarizing player on and off the floor. It stems from her comments about trans athletes in sports and how outspoken she is.

On the court, she’s a great 3-and-D player. She acted as an enforcer for Caitlin Clark and played a ton of minutes. Being a BFF with Clark has also proven to be a pretty good career move.
Which team would be a good fit for her?

The Dallas Wings have several guards who play in similar ways. Azzi Fudd, Arike Ogunbowale, and Paige Bueckers are guards who love to shoot the ball.
Cunningham would be a good fit because she can stretch the floor. She can also guard multiple positions.
The Missouri product shot 41.9% from three while averaging just under a steal per game. She doesn’t need 20 shots a game. She could take the defensive pressure off players like Bueckers.

The Atlanta Dream are in the WNBA Finals, but they’re on the brink of elimination. They’re down 3-2 to the Golden State Valkyries, and a certain shooting forward could add a dynamic element. Angel Reese and Cunningham could be a great defensive duo. She wouldn’t have to be a star player but just someone that could be a great role player.
Their combined impact would be amazing and help sustain the Dream’s championship window. No one would want to mess with this team on defense. She’ll always be ready if the playoffs get more physical, and she can hit clutch three-pointers.

This is the most logical place for her to land. The eight-year WNBA vet’s recent comments sounded like she might not return to the Indiana Fever. Cunningham creates a lot of noise and questions for Caitlin Clark to answer.
Clark is used to it by now. This organization might be best equipped to handle the ‘Sophie Cunningham’experience. Clark needs something that will protect her if opponents get under her skin. Cunningham isn’t afraid of anyone and was a key part of this squad.
