Athletics All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers has a torn meniscus in his knee and could miss the remainder of the 2026 MLB season, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports.
Langeliers, 28, sustained the injury while running the bases during Friday’s 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. His recovery timeline and possible return will be determined by whether or not surgery is required to repair the tear.

With surgery, Langeliers would be expected to require six to eight weeks to recover. That would put him on track to return in early to mid-September, which could take him to roughly one week before the end of the regular season.
The Athletics currently hold the third-worst record in the American League at 44-60, so qualifying for the postseason — or returning for a potential playoff push — is not a consideration.
However, Langeliers was expected to be a popular target at the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline with several contenders including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox pursuing an offensive upgrade at catcher.

This season, Langeliers has a .263/.332/.497 slash average with 23 home runs, 19 doubles and 51 RBI. Additionally, he’s reliable defensively behind the plate, throwing out 17 of 53 basestealers while allowing 7 passed balls and 18 wild pitches.
The Athletics were also in position to get a nice return in exchange for Langeliers, who has two more seasons of arbitration eligibility after this season and could thus yield more in trade.
