Last week former TCU Football head coach Gary Patterson was named to the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the 2026 class. It was officially announced Friday that Patterson has landed his next full-time assistant role, joining Lincoln Riley’s staff at USC as defensive coordinator.
Gary Patterson brought the Horned Frogs to unprecedented heights during his 20+ year tenure in Fort Worth, delivering six conference championships and 11 bowl wins, including the 2010 Rose Bowl and 2014 Peach Bowl. Patterson ended his TCU career with an overall record of 181-79 (70%), winning 10+ games in 11 different seasons, with Top Ten finishes in the AP Poll in 2017 (9th), 2015 (7), 2014 (3), 2010 (2), 2009 (6), and 2008 (7). After his time was over with TCU midway through the 2021 season, Patterson served in advisory analyst roles at Texas and Baylor.

In 2025, the USC defense allowed 23 points and over 350 yards per game, both ranking in the bottom half of the Big Ten and it was the most penalized defense in the conference. The Trojans ended the season 9-4 and ranked No. 20 in the AP Poll following an overtime loss to TCU in the Alamo Bowl.
