Germany’s Oliver Klemet, Lea Boy Claim Open Water Cup 3K Sprint Knockout Titles
Stop 2 of the World Aquatics Open Water Cup concluded from Ibiza, Spain, with the 3K knockout sprints.
Germany’s Oliver Klemet earned the gold medal with a finals time of 4:50.50.
Hungary’s David Bethlehem took the silver with a finals time of 4:51.60 and France’s Mark-Antoine Olivier earned the bronze in 4:53.50.
The 3K knockout had two heats, followed by a semifinals heat, then a finals heat to determine the winner.
Hungary’s Kristof Rasovzky was fourth in 4:57.00, followed by Italy’s Matteo Diodato (4:58.30), France’s Logan Fontaine (4:58.50), Italy’s Davide Marchello (4:59.50), Hungary’s Hunor Kovacs-Seres (5:01.90), France’s Sacha Velly (5:02.20) and Italy’s Andrea Filadelli (5:03.40), rounded out the top 10 in the men’s final.
Klemet swam his heat in 15:44.70 then went 9:59.60 in the semifinals to set up the 3K sprint in the final.
In the women’s Open Water Cup race, Germany’s Lea Boy won the gold medal in 5:18.50 during the 3K sprint final.
Hungary’s Bettina Fabian took the silver with a finals swim of 5:22.10 and Japan’s Ichika Kajimoto earned the bronze (5:22.20) just behind Fabian.
Germany’s Jeannette Spiworks took fourth in 5:29.70 in the finals, followed by Italy’s Ginevra Taddeucci (5:32.00), France’s Clemence Coccordano (5:32.40), Spain’s Paula Otero Fernandez (5:33.70), Angela Martinez Guillen (5:33.80), Italy’s Giulia Gabbrielleschi (5:35.20) and Antonietta Cesarano (5:36.90) rounded out the top 10 in the finals.
Boy finished fourth in the opening heat (17:30.60) then was seventh in the semifinals (11:15.90) before surging to the gold medal in the sprint.
