Maria Lenk Trophy: Gui Caribe Rips 21.46 in 50 Free
Gui Caribe continued an outstanding meet at the Maria Lenk Trophy by hitting the 50 freestyle Worlds cut on Friday.
Caribe got under the A standard with a morning prelims swim of 21.93 seconds. He backed it up in the final by going 21.46. He was one of three Brazilian swimmers to hit the A standard, with Victor Alcara earning the second spot in 21.82. Luca Peixoto was third in 22.02, which is under the automatic time of 22.05 to swim at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore this summer.
Pedro Spajari was fourth in 22.07. Marcelo Chierighini and Matheus Pereira tied for fifth in 22.31.
The 50 free added three new Worlds A cuts to the total of 15, on the fifth day of the six-day meet at Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in Rio. The third came from Lorrane Ferreira, who won the women’s 50 free in 24.78 seconds. That’s .08 seconds under the A cut. Ferreria, 32, will be swimming at her second World Championships, having gotten there at 2022.
Second was Stephanie Balduccini, who went 25.24 and fell short of her third swim at Worlds. Gabi Albiero was third in 25.29, with Luanna Oliveira .01 back and Beatriz Bezerra another .01 behind.
The 50 free was along six event finals Friday night. Nathalia Almeida won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.32, .17 seconds ahead of Gabrielle Roncatto. Leonardo Coelho Santos won the men’s 200 IM in 2:00.86, edging out Caio Pumputis’ 2:01.30. Stephan Steverink was third in 2:01.37.
Anna Amaral won the women’s 200 butterfly by nearly a second over Maria Fernanda Costa in 2:12.96. The 200 fly went to Gustavo Saldo in 1:57.46. He was three tenths ahead of Gabriel Moura. Six swimmers broke two minutes.
The meet wraps up Saturday night with six more finals and the medley relays.
