Miranda Grana, Andres Puente Set Mexican Records at National Meet
Miranda Grana and Andres Puente both set Mexican records at Mexican Nationals in Tijuana last week.
Grana went 1:00.02 in the women’s 100 backstroke to down the record set last summer by Celia Pulido at 1:00.60. That time gets the Indiana swimmer under the A cut for the 2025 World Aquatics Championships, set at 1:00.46 for the event later this year in Singapore.
Pulido was second in the 100 back in the meet, going 1:00.69 in prelims and 1:00.65 in finals. The Southern Illinois swimmer was the only Mexican female pool Olympian at the Paris Games last summer.
Puente laid down a time of 27.23 seconds in the men’s 50 breaststroke to down the national mark set at the 2023 World Championships by Miguel de Lara at 27.38. Puente’s record time came in prelims, and he returned to win the event in 27.48. The Worlds A cut is 27.33.
The two records were the only Worlds A cuts at the Selectivo a Eventos Internacionales meet held at Centro de Alto Rendimiento – Baja California.
Grana ended up winning four events at the five-day meet. She set B cuts for Worlds in the 100 fly (59.79) and the 200 back (2:11.86). She’s nearer the A cut in the 200 back, which is 2:11.08. She also won the 200 individual medley on the final day of the meet.
Pulido won the 50 back in 28.50 to beat Grana’s 28.76. Both are B cuts, chasing the A cut of 28.22. Pulido also won the 100 free in 56.22.
Puente swept the three men’s breaststroke events. He went 2:16.12 to claim the 200 and 1:01.75 in the 100, which is a Worlds B cut.
The meet produced two other B cuts. Stanford sprinter Andres Dupont Cabrera went 49.53 to win the 100 free. David Medina clocked in at 1:50.38 to win the 200 free, just .05 inside the B cut. Medina also won the 400 free.
Olympian Jorge Iga won the men’s 50 fly and 100 fly. Rafael Arizpe claimed the 200 fly, 400 IM and 200 back; he was second to Iga in the 100 fly and second to Maximiliano Vega Cuevas in the 200 IM. Diego Camacho Salgado won the 50 back and 100 back. He was second to Arizpe in the 200 back and third in the 50 free, won by Alfredo Velazquez Coronado in 23.02.
Andrea Sansores won the 50 fly (27.42) and 50 free (25.75). She was second to Grana in the 100 fly and third to Pulido and Grana in the 50 back.
