Roberto Hernandez officially steps back from coaching to focus on LA28

Roberto Hernandez, El Salvador’s most decorated compound archer, has announced that he is stepping away from his role as national coach – at least temporarily – to dedicate himself fully to preparing for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

In an Instagram post, the 36-year-old explained that after nearly ten years coaching, he is taking a pause to focus on his personal goals.

“The main objective is to dedicate more time to training, and to try to be at my best possible level, considering the inclusion of the compound in LA28 as a motivation to try to achieve a new goal for my country,” he told World Archery.

Since 2019, Hernandez has alternated between competing and coaching, often balancing both roles. He expressed gratitude to the athletes he has worked with over the past decade, leaving the door open for a future return to coaching.

“None of what we have achieved would have been possible without their effort, dedication and faith. I hope this pause is just a see you later.”

Hernandez had hinted at his Olympic ambitions as early as August 2022, saying at the time: “I hope that I can postpone my retirement date until the day after I have finished shooting in the Olympics.”

The new announcement confirms his commitment to making a competitive return for LA28, where compound archery is set to make its Olympic debut with a mixed team event.

Regarding El Salvador’s prospects at LA28, Hernandez said: “Well, it’s a very real possibility in both recurve and compound. I know we have the ability to achieve it in both categories and put on a good competition.”

On the coaching front, he confirmed that Carlos Salvador remains the national compound team coach and will lead the team in his absence.

He also noted that Linda Ochoa-Anderson recently joined the coaching staff to supervise and support the team alongside Salvador. The 38-year-old has confirmed she will provide guidance and development support but will not travel to every competition.
