Caitlin Clark Reveals Her Offseason Plans for Kelsey Mitchell as Indiana Fever Prepare for Major 2027 Roster Decisions

Caitlin Clark has already made her commitment to the Indiana Fever clear, expressing her intention to remain with the franchise for the foreseeable future. In fact, the superstar guard has even hinted at a willingness to make financial sacrifices in pursuit of a championship, potentially suggesting that she could forgo some of the money available through an EPIC (Exceptional Performance on Initial Contract) extension, which she is eligible to sign.

Beyond her personal commitment to Indiana, however, Clark is also determined to help the Fever retain their best talent, starting with her backcourt partner, Kelsey Mitchell. The two guards formed one of the league’s most productive partnerships this season, and Clark has promised to go above and beyond to convince Mitchell, who is now an unrestricted free agent, to remain in Indiana.

“We’re gonna work our butt off to get her back. We’re going to recruit her as hard as we can,” Clark said in her exit interview. “We need her. We love her. … I’ve shared with Kelsey how much I really want her back and how much I would love to continue playing with her. Hopefully we can keep her here for the rest of her career.”

Clark and Mitchell became the highest-scoring teammate duo in WNBA single-season history, averaging a combined 47.0 points per game. They also set a league record by each scoring at least 20 points in the same game 16 times. But despite their remarkable chemistry and success together, Mitchell has made it clear that her future in Indiana is far from guaranteed.

Clark’s vision for Mitchell’s development could reshape Indiana’s future. Subscribe to stay ahead of the Fever’s evolution and roster strategy.

During her end-of-season press conference, the veteran guard revealed that she intends to take a “selfish” approach to her upcoming unrestricted free agency, prioritizing her own needs and what she believes is best for her career.

“I have to be selfish,” Mitchell said during her end-of-season media session. “I think that’s where I am in my career … what I probably need and what’s probably best for me. So I have to be selfish in that room.”

Mitchell also spoke about the hate she’s received “specifically being an Indiana Fever basketball player.” Keeping that in mind, Clark acknowledged how her arrival changed things for Mitchell. “This was Kelsey’s team for seven years, and then a lot of eyeballs come to this team,” she said. Clark then credited Mitchell for having her back, making her push to keep the veteran guard personal as well as practical.

The Fever’s challenge, however, goes beyond convincing Mitchell to stay. Indiana must also find a way to fit three major contracts into its salary-cap structure. Aliyah Boston has already signed a four-year extension worth $6.3 million, while Mitchell could command a supermax deal and Clark is eligible for an EPIC extension of her own. Retaining the trio could therefore leave the front office with limited room to strengthen the supporting cast, as the three would potentially take up more than half of the team’s cap space.

But beyond Mitchell, Clark intends to work closely with the Fever’s front office, including general manager Amber Cox, to identify potential free-agent additions who can strengthen the roster.

“You hear rumblings about how players are in the locker room or what they’re like to play with and things like that, and that’s all helpful to the GM. So, you share those types of things about who you think we can get or whose play style will fit next to whoever it is and what positions are most important for us to get, so I think those are definitely conversations we have with Amber,” Clark said.

“It’s interesting because my first (offseason) we had some of those, then my second (offseason), just with the CBA, nobody really took visits to figure out where they wanted to go,” Clark said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of recruiting of free agents (last offseason) other than texting and calling. So I think this season will be a little bit different, and I’ll be very involved in that”.

The most predictable reinforcement for the Fever would be on the defensive side of things. With Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell, they were one of the best offensive teams this season. However, all that ended in a first-round exit in the playoffs, something Amber Cox described as disappointing.

“I think the expectation, and she’ll say this too, is always championship. We didn’t meet that expectation,” Cox said. “But we’re going to learn from it, and we’re going to grow. We’re all going to get in the room and get back to the drawing board, and we’re going to address some of those, and make sure that we’re ready to go when next season starts. And that includes Steph and the coaching staff.”

As it turns out, the sit-down around that drawing board will now include Caitlin Clark as well, with the Fever superstar preparing to play an active role in helping the front office build a roster capable of meeting the franchise’s championship expectations next season.
