Former LSU head coach Ed Orgeron said Wednesday he would “love” to return as the Tigers’ head coach following the firing of Brian Kelly earlier this week.

“I’d love to,” Orgeron said on ESPN’s Unsportsmanlike. “Are you kidding me? I just gotta get in my truck, I’ll be there today!”

Orgeron has been out of coaching since he last coached LSU from 2016 to 2021. He  compiled a 51-20 record and leading the Tigers to a 15-0 National Championship season in 2019 behind quarterback Joe Burrow. He was dismissed two years later after back-to-back .500 seasons.

Kelly’s tenure ended Sunday after a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M dropped LSU to 5-3, concluding an uneven four-year stretch in Baton Rouge. His firing triggered a $54 million buyout, which is the second largest in college football history, but negotiations are underway to reduce the total to half, according to multiple reports.

Since his departure, Orgeron has expressed interest in returning to the sidelines in any capacity, but LSU remains his dream job.

“I want a fit,” Orgeron recently told On3’s Andy Staples. “It may be a head coach job, it may be a defensive line job. I’m a championship coach, and I’m going to bring a winning program to their university.”
