Paul Finebaum, a recent guest on the Awful Announcing Podcast, has never been shy with his opinions. True to form, he’s been letting the hot takes fly this college football season, and on Sunday, Finebaum let Oklahoma Sooners head football coach Brent Venables have it.
Finebaum and Matt Barrie recapped Saturday’s college football action on The Matt Barrie Show, and Barrie asked Finebaum for his thoughts on the South Carolina Gamecocks after their 42-25 win over the Sooners.

“I was really interested in that game yesterday because I can’t get away from Oklahoma and how they started the season inside the top 10—and how Brent Venables was just given an extension by their new athletic director who came over from Illinois,” Finebaum said. “I have rarely seen a guy limping more than Venables right now.”
“Conversely, four weeks ago, [South Carolina head coach] Shane Beamer was dead,” Finebaum continued. “Nobody’s dead in this sport! It is a little bit like Halloween. I mean, Lincoln Riley, you name the coach, and they have come back from the dead. Although, I am going to tell you right now: Brent Venables is dead. He is not getting back. He is out of ammunition. This has been an abject disaster for him, and unfortunately for Oklahoma fans, they are stuck with him.”
By losing to South Carolina, Oklahoma fell to 4-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play on the year. Venables opened his postgame press conference like a man who is well aware of the pressure he’s up against.
“I’m not going to say a whole lot other than just the obvious,” Venables said. “I’m not gonna sit here and try to explain or excuse or anything else. Got our a** whooped tonight in every way and really disappointed.”

It won’t get any easier for the Sooners, either. They’ll visit the No. 25 Florida Gators next Saturday, followed by a matchup with the No. 12 Ole Miss Rebels on Nov. 14.
