Ricky Stenhouse Jr. came agonizingly close to winning Sunday’s YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway, ultimately settling for third place after an intense final-lap battle. The Hyak Motorsports driver started 24th, led nine laps and put himself in position to capture another superspeedway victory.

Stenhouse was particularly strong during the closing portion of the race, repeatedly trading the lead with Joey Logano before the massive accident on Lap 183 forced overtime. He remained among the contenders on the final restart and appeared to have the necessary momentum to reach Victory Lane.

After taking command of the race on the final lap, Stenhouse moved high to defend against William Byron approaching the finish. That decision opened the bottom lane for Kyle Larson, who surged forward to win by 0.041 seconds.

Although Stenhouse missed an opportunity to secure the victory, his performance continued to demonstrate his ability to compete at NASCAR’s drafting tracks. The third-place finish also provided a significant boost to his points total.

Stenhouse climbed one position to 28th in the overall NASCAR Cup Series standings with 515 points after missing the championship Chase. He will attempt to build on this momentum during the final two races at Martinsville and Homestead-Miami.
